Victoria Torres Pecis - Malvasia Seco 2018
(La Palma, Canary Islands)
Pure volcanic goodness from the tiny island of La Palma in the Canaries. This is made from old bush vines that have been clinging on to a wind-battered slope in the island's Southwest for over 120+ years. The soils here are pure black volcanic ash, giving the wine a very distinct flinty character, and a dominant mineral backbone. Dense fruit, refreshing acidity, gorgeous aromas... this the sort of wine that sticks in your memory forever.
Victoria Torres is one of the very few growers still producing wine on La Palma. The work is painstaking and the yields are minuscule, but the results are more than worth the effort. She makes wines that have it all - a strong sense of place, intense complexity, buckets of energy, and that little extra 'magic' that you can't learn or replicate.
