The Top Drops
This bundle features three absolute stunners within their respective styles: white, red, and sparkling
l to r:
(Burgundy, France) Domaine de Thalie - Les Pierres Levées 2018
This is proper white Burgundy. Chardonnay from a single vineyard on marl and limestone soils, vinified in steel tanks and aged in old barrels for one year and in bottle for an additional year. This is from a high altitude site where phenolic ripeness is achieved with the perfect balance of fruit and acidity. Linear but textured, rounded but retrained, this is the sort of Chardonnay that fascinates us. Great tension and salinity, and so much joy and complexity.
Made by Peter Gierszewki, a first generation Burgundian of Polish parents who started this small 4.5 ha estate in 2009 with a view to push the limits of natural farming in his parcels, an ethos he also brings into the cellar. Beautiful naturally made Burgundy wines but with a very strong sense of belonging.
(Cahors, France) Domaine La Calmette - Butte Rouge 2018
100% Malbec from the estate's most limited and prized parcel. All of the grapes come from 'Butte Rouge,' a plot with the rare combination of siderolithic red clay sitting on top of Kimmeridgian rock. The clay is so iron-rich that it is possible to find rusty iron stones in between the vines. Only the best and healthiest bunches of grapes are used here, they are fermented in concrete vats and aged in a 1000L 'foudre' for two years prior to bottling. This is a real 'Grand Vin' that over delivers on all fronts. Out of their three top cuvées it is the leanest in terms of density, and perhaps the most delicate. It has an undeniable mineral streak and tension, and a pronounced blood orange zestiness with a long and gratifying finish.
Domaine La Calmette was started in 2015 by Maya & Nicolas, a talented couple who bring not only a thorough knowledge of viticulture but also a meticulously researched scientific backbone to their natural wines. Explosive, bursting with life and vibrancy.
(Kamptal, Austria) Nibiru - Ancestrale Rosé 2020 PET NAT
Very juicy and elegant pet nat made from the Blauer Portugieser and Zweigelt varieties. Bursts of red and forest fruits that lead to a spicy and mineral finish. Lovely textured mouthfeel and creamy bubbles.
A great insight into the top range from Julia & Josef, a young couple who are only on their fifth vintage but showing impressive maturity.
