Serious French Reds
In this bundle we bring you three of our most exciting reds, regardless of country. We have a juicy and lean Southern red, a stunning Malbec from its spiritual home in Cahors, and a top Burgundy Pinot Noir.

(Burgundy, France) Domaine de Thalie – Balancin 2018
Serious Burgundy Pinot Noir that punches far above its weight. Made with 70% whole bunches and lightly extracted, then aged in old barrels for one year and in bottle for another year. Buckets of complex red fruits, but with a really distinct earthy and darker edge than some of the super fruit-forward Pinots from this region. Gorgeous depth and balance, with a soft structure that keeps it together and will ensure a long life ahead should you choose to cellar it, although it's ready to drink now. Made by Peter Gierszewski, a first generation Burgundian of Polish parents who started this small 4.5 ha estate in 2009 with a view to push the limits of natural farming in his parcels, an ethos he also brings into the cellar. Beautiful naturally made Burgundy wines but with a very strong sense of belonging.
(Cahors, France) La Calmette - Bois Grand 2017
Serious yet juicy and immediate. This Malbec/Merlot blend comes from a single vineyard of old vines planted on Kimmeridgian rock in France's South West. It was aged for one year in old barrels followed by 18 months in bottle and is drinking beautifully now. There is a tense mineral backbone which is uncommon in reds, let alone in Malbec. Gorgeous perfumed aromatic of purple/dark berry fruits, with notes of caramel and a slight savoury edge. A medium/full-bodied wine with the structure expected from Malbec but without the over extraction of the over-oaked character that this region can be known for. This still ticks all the boxes for Malbec but showcases a restraint and a finesse that makes this one of the best expressions of the grape we have come across.
Domaine La Calmette was started in 2015 by Maya & Nicolas, a talented couple who bring not only a thorough knowledge of viticulture but also a meticulously researched scientific backbone to their natural wines. Explosive, bursting with life and vibrancy.
(Languedoc, France) Mas d’Agalis – Au Mas 2018
Absolutely wonderful expression of Southern France's typical blends. Primarily Syrah with some Grenache, Carignan, and Cinsault. This wine is made with a very light touch, no punchdowns or any sort of extraction, leading to a light/medium body and very delicate profile. Stunning aromatic of bright red fruits, spicy edges, and a proper 'garrigue' herbal complexity. Juicy and fresh, but with some well integrated tannins that keep this wine serious yet very moreish. Made by Lionel Maurel, a fourth generation grower who took over the family vines after stints working with some of the biggest names in the natural wine world across France. He primarily works with an 'infusion' style of winemaking, favouring gentle and light extractions as opposed to the more powerful examples that are common in this region. His wine are delicate, elegant, and fresh, real expressions of his immediate subzone and soils.
