(Languedoc, France) Mas d'Agalis - Navis 2017
A serious, structured red from Southern France. This Mourvedre & Grenache dominant blend went through strict selection of the best bunches, was made in an infusion style for a delicate expression, and was aged in barrels for 18 months. The result is a wine that is drinking beautifully now but will keep improving. Potent aromatic of red fruits and wild herbs, a medium/structured body, and a complex, long finish. Made by Lionel Maurel, a fourth generation grower who took over the family vines after stints working with some of the biggest names in the natural wine world across France. He primarily works with an 'infusion' style of winemaking, favouring gentle and light extractions as opposed to the more powerful examples that are common in this region. His wine are delicate, elegant, and fresh, real expressions of his immediate subzone and soils.
(Burgenland, Austria) Joiseph - Mischkultur 2018
A 'field' blend of 6 varieties, meaning that they are all grown together in the same vineyard, harvested together, and vinified together. This wine is fresh and highly drinkable but also has just enough texture, a lovely aromatic profile, and is very immediate. Joiseph is a collaboration between three friends that started with the 2015 vintage and has grown from a tiny hectare to nearly five hectares. The wines across the range are distinct, wildly exciting, and full of energy.
(Tuscany, Italy) Fattoria di Sammontana - Alberese 2019
JUICY! This blend of red and white grapes yields a wine that is light, energetic, juicy, but that also has a streak of seriousness. Sangiovese and Trebbiano are fermented together with a very brief time on skins, and then aged in steel tanks. Red fruit profile, a mineral edge, and lovely savoury note. The perfect red for a warm day or night. Made by Daniele & Dario, the fourth generation at this Tuscan estate. Within the range they make a balanced mix of traditional Sangioveses along with experimental wines vinified in clay amphoras (see the orange wine section).
