Italian Reds (3-pack)
This pack features:
(Puglia, Italy) L'Archetipo - Aglianico 2014
One of our current favourites on the list. This release of L'Archetipo's Aglianico is a lesson in elegance. Coming from high altitude vineyards, this wine retains a freshness and lean character not very common for this grape variety. The 6+ years of aging have also softened the tough tannins that Aglianico can sometimes exhibit. The result is pure luxury. A rustic yet precise wine in its absolute prime.
(Piemonte, Italy) Cascina Zerbetta - Piangalardo 2018
This estate's top bottling. A blend of Barbera with a little bit of Merlot grown on Terra Rossa, a heavy red clay soil that results in wines of a certain concentration and structure. Following fermentation the wine spends 18 months in old 500L barrels. Black cherries, plums, and tar along with spices and smoke, it features a great balance of structure and freshness to keep this full-bodied wine very drinkable. Will need 10-15mins of air upon opening and will keep improving over the course of a few days, if you can make it last.
(Tuscany, Italy) Fattoria di Sammontana - San Firenze Chianti Superiore 2020
This Chianti is made from 100% Sangiovese, from a single plot of the estate's best vines. It spends one year in old barrels followed by a couple of years in the bottle before release. It's generous but restrained, has beautiful bright fruit and starting to show some development. Superb.
