Duo Two - Firm & Assertive
In Top-Drop Duos we showcase some of the lesser-seen bottles on our list, some of the rarities we rarely showcase in tastings and some of our most prized cuvées.
Duo Two is about wines of power and immediacy. At Modal Wines we're not about the big & bold or the over-the-top. Quite the opposite. Rather, these are wines with very defined and strong flavour profiles that delight upon the first sip.

(Cahors, France) La Calmette - Bois Grand 2017
Serious yet juicy and immediate. This Malbec/Merlot blend comes from a single vineyard of old vines planted on Kimmeridgian rock in France's South West. It was aged for one year in old barrels followed by 18 months in bottle and is drinking beautifully now. There is a tense mineral backbone which is uncommon in reds, let alone in Malbec. Gorgeous perfumed aromatic of purple/dark berry fruits, with notes of caramel and a slight savoury edge. A medium/full-bodied wine with the structure expected from Malbec but without the over extraction of the over-oaked character that this region can be known for. This still ticks all the boxes for Malbec but showcases a restraint and a finesse that makes this one of the best expressions of the grape we have come across.
(Goriška Brda, Slovenia) Atelier Kramar - Bohem 2017
Made from the local Tocai Friulano grape, this is a white wine with mouth-filling texture, gorgeous sweet spice and white peach aromatics, and a mineral finish that goes on and on and on. The wine sees three days of skin contact but doesn't pick up much colour. Bottled after 18 months in old barrels. A wine with a strong character but that stays fresh at 12% abv. A must-taste. Made by former artists Katja and Matjaz, who built their dream atelier in the picturesque Brda region and eventually fell into winemaking full time. Wines rooted in local tradition but with a modern expression and real elegance.
