(Mosel, Germany) Staffelter Hof - Müller Time 'Sandersstruck' 2019
The sort of orange wine you can drink all day. Made from Müller Thurgau, it's lean, has hardly any tannins, is soft but crisp at the same time, and just ridiculously quaffable with a slight 'spritz'. An all-weather joy that will work wonders with most foods or as the perfect aperitif. Made by Jan Klein, the latest generation at the helm on this historical estate which has been in the family since 1805, but operating as a winery since 862...! Jan started to produce a special range of wines with no added sulphites in 2014, a range that has now expanded to nearly ten singular wines.
(Douro, Portugal) Folias de Baco - Anfora 2019
A new release from Tiago Sampaio, made from two hyper local and nearly extinct varieties - Samarrinho and Donzelihno. The wine spent 11 months on its skins in large amphoras and was bottled shortly thereafter. Gorgeous citrusy complexity, floral, herbal, long finish. Flinty and reductive upon opening but it opens up with 10-15 mins of air or decanting. Made by Tiago Sampaio, a grower who took over his Grandparents' vineyards and 2007 and has progressively become one of Portugal's most sought after natural wine producers.
(Kamptal, Austria) Malinga - Sauvignon Blanc 2018
A disctint aromatic orange wine. Herbal notes, stone fruits, very enticing interplay of savoury and fruity profiles on the palate. Gorgeous premium wine that spends about two weeks on its skins before aging in barrels for one year. Made by Christoph Heiss, a young producer who has recently taken over his family's winery in Engabrunn, Kamptal, and is producing some of the most exciting wines in Austria today. Christoph is a big proponent of natural farming and biodiversity, and we're excited to follow him on his journey.
(Hlohovec, Slovakia) Slobodne - Cutis Pinoter 2017
A deep coloured Pinot Gris that spent two weeks on its skins and 18 months in steel tanks. One of Slobodne's flagship orange wines, this 2017 vintage is absolutely glorious. Floral, stone fruits but also red fruits, guava, and much more. In a strange way, close your eyes and it's almost as if you are drinking a Pinot Noir. Slobodne are a fascinating family-run winery going back to the early 20th century. They rebuilt their farm over the past 25 years following a 50-yr break due to the hardships of WWII and then 40 years of communism. Now run by two sisters and their two partners, they are making some of the most exciting skin-contact wines around today.
(Tuscany, Italy) Fattoria di Sammontana - Primo Fuoco Bianco 2019
A very small production wine made from Trebbiano Toscano. The wine spent three months on its skins (!) and a further 6 months in local clay amphoras. This one is structured and firm, but with a salty complexity and savoury character that will work wonders with most white meats, chunky white fish, or any bold flavours in food. Serious stuff. Made by Daniele & Dario, the fourth generation at this biodynamic Tuscan estate. Within the range they make a balanced mix of traditional Sangioveses along with these more experimental wines vinified in clay amphoras.
(Burgenland, Austria) Joiseph - Muskat Ottonel 2019
A limited, single-varietal release from Joiseph. Muskat Ottonel is known for its extravagant aromatics, tropical and floral notes, and moreish character when in the right hands. This example sees two weeks of skin contact, and aging in old barrels. The colour is mild, and whilst this is a very expressive wine in terms of its aromatic profile, it features a restrained palate that veers more towards the citrus side than the over-the-top tropical side that this grape can sometimes produce. It's fresh, mouthwatering, and it's possible you will actually spend more time smelling it than drinking it. Gorgeous stuff.
