Silice Viticultores - Finca Romeu 2017
(Ribeira Sacra, Galicia, Spain)
Total production = 540 bottles
The 'Finca' series of three wines from Silice Viticultores represent a triumph in their journey to recover age-old parcels from the landscapes of their youth in the jaw-dropping beauty of the forgotten Ribeira Sacra.
These are wines that speak of their heroic and extreme viticulture, very old vines, old tradition, but also simplicity. With the raw material being this good, one should do the utmost minimum to bring out its inherent magnificence.
The Finca wines are always vinified with 100% whole bunches, and aged in small (but old) barrels for 16-18 months before aging in bottle for another 18-24 months.
'Finca Romeu' is perhaps the most immediate of the three. A dense and heady aromatic of wild flowers, red fruits, and some savoury notes. In the mouth the wine is lean but velvety, and shows different sides of its character as it progresses through the palate and finishes with an impressive length. A wine to get completely lost in, a wine of meditation.
Spain's answer to Burgundy? Perhaps so.
This wine comes in an individual wooden box, and has been hand-numbered by the winemakers.
