Slobodne - Alternativa 2015
The estate's top red. This wine is made every year strictly from the best grapes of Frankovka Modra (Blaufränkisch) found on the property. Although every vintage has its own unique characteristics, the 2015 vintage has gone down as arguably the best that Slobodne have experienced when referring to the growing conditions and the health of the grapes at harvest. One of the traits of this vintage is the brightness and 'airiness' it's given the wines. This Blaufrankisch spent 6 weeks on its skins and yet it is so light. Barely pushing 11%, this delicate wine is a real surprise on the palate. A complex blend of dark and red fruits, hints of pepper, and juicy acidity. We are always thrilled by wines that pack such a level of complex flavours in such a lean package.
Slobodne are a fascinating family-run winery going back to the early 20th century. They rebuilt their farm over the past 25 years following a 50-yr break due to the hardships of WWII and then 40 years of communism. Now run by two sisters and their two partners, they are making some of the most exciting skin-contact wines around today.
